Spring Restored in Tangnuam village

Spring Restored in Tangnuam village
~ Kamzalian Tomging

One spring fondly named Khukpi which supplies clean and tasty drinking water to Tangnuam village under Churachandpur district, Manipur was restored. The existing springs in the village are Khukpi, Khang lui and Tualchin lui; most of them are non-functional as of now. Tangnuam happens to be one of the oldest and important villages but neglected, now enters into 75 year of its existence with 291 household.

It may be recalled that these sources of water for the village was supplemented by one deep-well handpump in the year 1985 under one special programme jointly designed by the India government, UNICEF & World Health Organization (WHO) named Mark II hand pump. This installation in the village is another record holder as it was the deepest bore well in the district at about 310 ft deep giving a pleasant taste of water which is still functional.

In order to complete this pertinent work of restoration of the spring the local MLA, MDC, social workers and the village chief contributed for the same. The villagers also contributed along with their hard day labour for days at a stretch. They took the help of a JCB excavator to deepen the collection chamber which is now a cemented tank covered with GI sheet.

As on date, the water supply from Mata dam got disrupted these days which makes the restoration most timely and relevant. The restored spring was inaugurated and blessed on 29 May 2021 by pastor Palet Thuomngell followed by a celebratory high tea in a low-key affair by observing the SoP due to the pandemic. The village is now waiting for the Jal Jeevan Mission - Har Ghar Jal of the govt., Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) in every rural home for day-to-day use besides drinking water. It is also informed that the internal village roads will be upgraded through MGNEGS in days to come.
